Early Sacred Music Performance and Sing-Along in Berkeley
Mostly Motets
June 8th @ 1.30pm
We will sing unaccompanied, sacred music mostly from the Renaissance and Middle Ages.  Since that music is less familiar to most people than what is sung in more typical sing-alongs (e.g. the Messiah), the format will be a bit different.

San Francisco Saxophone Quartet
Redwood Arts Council
May 31st @ 8.15pm
Occidental Community Church, Occidental

Founded in 1977, and performing on the streets of San Francisco since 1989, the quartet uses transcriptions of classical masters such as Bach, Handel and Mozart as well as contemporary pieces and arrangements of jazz and popular standards by Duke Ellington, Mel Torme, Sonny Rollins and others. Somehow, these four saxophones manage to sound like a much larger assemblage, one including the sounds of oboes, trumpets, French horns, violins, and more. This is a skilled ensemble of the first order, whose sound is often more like an orchestra than a quartet.
Euclid String Quartet
SRJC Chamber Series
May 2nd @ 8pm
Santa Rosa Junior College Newman Auditorium, Santa Rosa

Described by the Denver Post as “electric,” the Euclid Quartet is a multi-national group known for performances filled with personality and vibrant color.  Awards earned include third prize at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in Japan, and top prizes at the Carmel, Yellow Springs and Hugo Kauder competitions. In 2002 and 2003 the quartet was one of three ensembles selected worldwide to participate as a fellowship quartet at the Aspen Music Festival in  Colorado.

As the only string quartet entirely devoted to the music of tango, Cuartetango is a leading exponent of Nuevo Tango. Founded by Argentinian violinist Leonardo Suarez Paz, now based in New York, this fiery ensemble fuses traditional tango style with jazz and classical elements.

Philippe Bianconi
Santa Rosa Symphony
May 10th,11th,12th
Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, Santa Rosa

This program of Russian composers is high-energy, diverse in temperament and rich in color. Cliburn silver medalist Philippe Bianconi debuts with the SRS performing Rachmaninoff’s final and most perfect of his works for piano and orchestra. The music of Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera shares the spotlight with Stravinsky’s The Firebird, in its complete 1910 version.
Elizabeth Dorman and Tanya Tomkins

Elizabeth Dorman is a 20 year old San Francisco pianist whose playing has been described “…as striking for its restraint as for its technical assurance … unnervingly precocious.

Tanya Tomkins is a virtuoso on both the Baroque and modern cello, having been described as “a cellist with a very special and unusual intensity,” and one “who combines and intense dramatic fire with Apollonian poise.”
